Since August 2, 2026, the European Union’s AI Regulation requires major providers to mark their generated content so it can be detected.

The safest methods to remove AI watermarking are: rewriting in your own words, changing paragraph structures, adding your own examples and data, combining short and long sentences, and reading the text out loud.

Before we dive in, if your goal is for that content to rank and convert, check out this guide on SEO and GEO content that ranks and converts.

How to remove the watermark with real examples

There’s no magic button to erase it, because it isn’t a visible element you can crop like in an image. But there are ways to dilute it almost completely while working the text:

01

Rewrite in your own words

Don’t just change the occasional adjective; reformulate whole sentences and change the order of the ideas. It’s the same principle I apply to SEO copywriting versus standard writing.

02

Change the paragraph structure

If the AI always starts the same way, alter the order of introduction, body and closing. Break the symmetry the model tends to repeat.

03

Add your own examples and data

Nothing dilutes a statistical pattern more than including information the AI didn’t generate. Real figures from your business, anecdotes, specific cases.

04

Combine short and long sentences

Models tend to a fairly uniform rhythm; breaking that rhythm helps a lot. Alternate very short sentences with longer subordinate ones.

05

Read the text out loud

If it sounds odd or impersonal, that’s a sign it still retains too much of the AI’s original style. The further the final text moves from the model’s literal wording, the weaker any embedded pattern becomes.

Side-by-side examples

With watermarkWithout watermark
«Artificial intelligence has transformed the way we create content.»«I’ve been noticing for a while how AI has changed the way I write, and not always for the better.»
«SEO is the practice of optimizing content for search engines. In my opinion, it’s essential for any blog.»«For me, SEO has been key in every blog I’ve run. That said, optimizing content for search engines is still the foundation of everything.»
«Professionals tend to be more productive when they organize their time well.»«This week I spent 12 of my 40 working hours just organizing tasks, and I noticed the difference.»
«Artificial intelligence has changed the way we work and write, and it has also changed the way we consume content online.»«AI has changed how we work. And how we write. Also how we consume content, though sometimes we don’t even notice.»

What exactly is a text watermark?

It’s not a symbol or added text, as you might think in an image. It’s an invisible statistical pattern.

Some models include it when choosing certain words during generation. That pattern doesn’t change what the text says or add extra characters.

Image watermark vs. text watermark

Although they share a name, they’re two quite different things. In an image, the watermark is usually a visible logo or symbol in a corner.

It’s something you can crop or edit with any tool. In a text, on the other hand, there’s nothing to see or crop.

It’s a statistical pattern found in word choice. This pattern is invisible both to the reader and to the writer.

Golden rule: while an image watermark can be removed with a simple crop, a text watermark is only diluted by rewriting the content in your own style.

How this affects those who write for their blog

This is where many people worry more than they need to.

If you use AI to help you draft, but then review, rewrite and give it your own style, that statistical signal loses strength naturally.

The reason is simple. The watermark depends on the exact pattern of words the model chooses. If you change the structure of the sentences, alter the order of the ideas or write in your own style, that pattern is lost.

And as for SEO, don’t worry. Google doesn’t penalize content for having or not having that invisible watermark. Ranking depends on the quality, usefulness and experience the content offers. The key lies in properly applying the principles of E-E-A-T: experience, authority and trust on Google.

Current status of watermarks across platforms

As of September 2026, here’s the landscape per platform:

PlatformText watermark?
Claude (models after 08/02/2026)Yes
GeminiYes
ChatGPTNo, for now
GrokNo clear confirmation from xAI
Other models (Llama, Mistral, DeepSeek)No confirmed text watermarking

This landscape may change as the European AI Regulation progresses. If you want to be ready, review how to optimize your website for AI (GEO) and keep a properly configured llms.txt file handy.

And if your goal is to appear in these AIs’ answers, you’ll want to know how to appear on ChatGPT with your business and the differences between SEO, GEO and AEO.

If you produce content with AI regularly, I recommend integrating it into an SEO content plan in 5 steps that combines AI, human editing and your own data. And if you want to check how your blog is performing, run a complete SEO audit in 7 steps before scaling production.

In summary

The text watermark is an invisible statistical pattern, not a visible symbol. It can’t be «erased» with a button, but it can be diluted almost completely by rewriting in your own style, adding your own data and examples, and breaking the model’s uniform rhythm.

Google doesn’t penalize for having or not having that watermark. What it rewards is useful, original and well-structured content. And that, today, is still human work.
